How to Troubleshoot a Disconnected Printer

This Article provides steps to troubleshoot common issues with a disconnected printer

Steps:

  1. Check the connections:

    • Wired Printers: Ensure the USB or Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the printer and your computer.
    • Wireless Printers: Confirm the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. If necessary, re-enter the Wi-Fi password.

  2. Check if the printer is powered on and free of error messages. Also, inspect for paper jams or low ink/toner warnings

  3. Try restarting your devices by turning off both the printer and your computer. Then wait 30 seconds, then turn them back on.

  4. Check your network connection. For wireless printers, make sure your printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. You might need to reconnect it to the network by entering the Wi-Fi password again.

  5. Go to your computer's printer settings. Then set the disconnected printer as the default printer.
    • For Windows: Uncheck 'Let Windows manage my default printer' if necessary.
    • MacOS: Select the printer and click “Open Print Queue.”
  6. Please ensure to install the updated drivers or reinstall them if necessary.

  7. Run Printer Troubleshooter by using the built-in printer troubleshooter on your computer.
    • For Windows: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Printer.
    • MacOS: Select the printer in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, then click 'Open Print Queue.'
